MUMBAI - Output of most crops is expected to decline in Andhra Pradesh as state has declared a drought, due to below-normal rains, which has severely hit yields, a senior official with the state farm department told Cogencis.

Production of maize in the 2018-19 (Jul-Jun) season is seen declining 28% on year to 1.67 mln tn due to a sharp fall in yields. Yield is seen at 6,275 kg per ha as against 6,851 kg per ha in 2017-18. Widespread attack of fall armyworm has also hit maize crop in the state, official said.

Cotton output during the season is seen falling 30% on year to 1.44 mln bales (1 bale = 170 kg) due to lower acreage and yields. Andhra Pradesh is one of India's major maize and cotton producers. In Jun-Sep, Andhra Pradesh received 443.1 mm rainfall, 12% below normal. Villages in Anantapur district have been declared drought-hit, and major parts of Kadapa, Kurnool, Chittoor, Prakasam and Nellore witnessed scanty and deficient rainfall.

Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Odisha and Rajasthan have reportedly declared themselves drought-hit this year. The state's paddy output is seen declining 4% on year to 12.16 mln tn. Andhra Pradesh has pegged foodgrain output at 15.24 mln tn, compared with 16.68 mln tn last year. Among oilseeds, groundnut output is seen falling sharply by 53% on year to 485,000 tn. Output of oilseeds in the state is seen at 2.43 mln tn, against 2.87 mln the previous year, the data showed.

The following is the third advance estimate of output in Andhra Pradesh for the 2018-19 (Jul-Jun) crop year, in tn, compared with year-ago figures, and year-on-year change:
